I receive messages all the time from amazingly beautiful souls like yourself who are excited to try meditation or a spiritual practice in order to regain control of their life.
Although this a great notion and goal, it is false. A lie taught to us by a society that believes that if we just bought one more pair of shoes or if we just moved one more step higher on the social ladder, we would finally gain the control we so long for.
Even if we know it won’t happen we still do it, after hearing over and over again from people that “money won’t buy” you happiness or that when you become successful it won’t be like imagined.
But we still continue on. Striving for me. Striving for comfort. Striving for control, because we believe if we just had control everything would be alright.
However, control, like most beliefs we have is an illusion. Pema Chodron, the prolific writer, and Buddhist nun, speaks to this illustration beautifully in her book When Things Fall Apart.
“Rather than letting our negativity get the better of us, we could acknowledge that right now we feel like a piece of shit and not be squeamish about taking a good look.” — Pema Chödrön
She teaches that the way to relieve ourselves from suffering, which is optional and self-created, we most not gain control over life, we must realize that life is something we can never control, and therefore we must learn to accept this ‘groundlessness.’
Life can be summed up easy by Pema: Life is like falling from a tall building, but the good thing is, there is no ground to land on.
What if instead of running away from bad thoughts we leaned into them?
What if instead of racing off to the tv, phone, or closest bar when we become overwhlemed, we were able to sit with it and realize that it wasn’t the end of the world?
The answer may be just what you seek.
